BEING HUMAN: THE COURAGE TO SIMPLY BE

“This is a book that did something to me while I was reading it. Rodney King has written more than a comforting meditation on slowing down; he has given us a philosophical argument with teeth and allowed that argument to become flesh through the life he has actually lived. Being Human changed how I sat with my own clients. That is no small thing for a book to do to a practitioner twelve years into this work. Rodney has given us a usable philosophical instrument, not merely a good read.”

- DR. JONATHAN ERIC CARROLL,

PASTORAL COUNSELOR, PSYCHOTHERAPIST & PHILOSOPHICAL PRACTITIONER

THE WALKING PHILOSOPHER

The Walking Philosopher is part memoir, part field companion for anyone feeling disoriented in life. After years of full-contact martial arts left me physically, neurologically, and existentially broken, I found myself on the Isle of Man in 2020 with no map forward—so I walked. Step by step, the coastal paths and quiet trails became a classroom, where I rediscovered how to slow down, listen differently, and remember what it means to be fully human.

Blending personal experience, philosophical reflection, research, and simple walking practices, this book invites you to walk beside me as you navigate your own transitions, grief, or search for meaning.

As Paul Musso, PhD, writes:

“Rodney’s life story is incredible and the work he is doing to help others is incredibly timely.”

Mindful Embodied Leadership: Mindfulness-in-Action as a Catalyst for Leadership Performance

My doctoral research explores mindfulness in the moments when leadership actually happens. Drawing on leaders’ experiences and training through martial arts movements, it examines how presence and bodily awareness relate to the challenges of leading. A useful read for leaders, coaches and researchers interested in practising mindfulness in action.

The Guide’s Role in Nature-Based Experiences

What does a guide contribute to a meaningful encounter with nature? Drawing on interviews with seven nature-based guides, my research explores how they encourage presence, engage the senses and support clients’ well-being goals. For coaches, therapists and nature practitioners interested in the care involved in guiding these experiences.

The philosophical health compass: A new and comprehensive assessment tool for researching existential dimensions of wellbeing

Published in Methodological Innovations, this co-authored article introduces a proposed questionnaire exploring six dimensions of philosophical well-being. For researchers, philosophical practitioners and curious readers, it offers a way to consider questions of identity, belonging and purpose—and how structured assessment might complement the depth of philosophical dialogue.
